This is the latest version as as of September 2013.

Life After Boat. Some time around 2009, the second VanNess bikecar was built. I missed sailing greatly and was quickly moved to add a sail rig. In love with the lightweight twin jib of my Jensen Cal 21, I created one from plastic house wrap from the local hardware store. I used the pretty colored duct tape to trim the edges for support and to tape in a dart to create an airfoil. The original mast was a piece of bamboo. Since then, I have improved the 4mil plastic and duct tape technique. It is cheap, effective, colorful, and repairs are easy with duct tape on both sides. I tend to hit a few tree branches in the bike lane. It is just under 13'6" to clear telephone and power lines.

The bike sails just like a sailboat. She is well ballasted with two adult riders, but can heel surprisingly in high winds. The wheels are built maximum bmx tuff at our local operated Back Alley Bikes of Carrboro, NC. The main drive is a Sturmey Archer 8 speed hub with a drum brake.
